STEM Days: Sailing!

People have been sailing on Paw Paw Lake for over a hundred years! Join us as we explore the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) that power sailboats using US Sailing's STEM curriculum. Designed for grades 6 and up!

Tues, August 8, 10:00-noon: Measuring Wind
How can we use wind if we can’t see it? We’ll explore this topic by identifying wind clues, making a wind anemometer, and
measuring wind!

Tues, August 15, 10:00-noon: Buoyancy
How do boats float? We’ll investigate this topic by learning about buoyancy, density, and water displacement!

Tues, August 22, 10:00-noon: Sail Area and Perimeter
Why are most sails triangular in shape? We’ll dive into this topic by measuring sails and using the Pythagorean Theorem!

Tues, August 29, 10:00-noon: Land and Sea Breezes
How is the air affected by the land and water below it? We’ll look at how temperature affects the movement of air.
