Grand Opening for Crate, Basket and Veneer Machinery Collection

The North Berrien Historical Museum is excited to unveil its newest permanent collection: the Southwest Michigan Crate, Basket and Veneer Machinery Collection.

The collection showcases 22 basket making machines that were made by two Twin City companies, St. Joe Ironworks and Saranac Machine Company, between 1890-1950 and used by Monte Packaging Company in Riverside. The museum received ownership of the machinery from Monte Packaging Company back in 2014 and has been working diligently to move, clean, and prepare the collection for visitors to enjoy.

Join us as we mark this long-awaited occasion. Starting at 2:00 pm there will be a delicious hot dog cookout. Then at 2:45 pm keynote speaker Sam Monte of Monte Packaging Company will share the significance of the machinery to the community. Immediately following, Bob Hatch, grandson of St Joe Ironworks founder, will ceremoniously cut the ribbon, officially opening the collection for public viewing.
